The Matterhorn

The first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 – which killed four of the seven climbers – forever changed the course of a region that until then had been in extreme isolation. The Matterhorn became world famous and became the goal of ambitious mountaineers.

However, its ascent continues to be a very demanding test to this day and can only be overcome by experienced mountaineers, equipped with good equipment and competent guides. At the foot of the busiest route are the Hörnlihütte hut  at 3,260 meters above sea level, the Base Camp Matterhorn opened in 2015 after a complete renovation and the Berghaus Matterhorn accommodation.

From the Klein-Matterhorn (Matterhorn Paradise) you have a fantastic view of the most photographed mountain in the world. Both mountains are only separated by the Theodul pass and glacier. Klein-Matterhorn Peak is connected to Zermatt  via cable cars . The mountain station at 3820 masl is the highest cable car station in the Alps.
