The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (RBC) was established by Presidential Decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on May 23, 1989; in 1993 he joined the International Network of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program. It is included within the Biodiversity Conservation Program in Selected Protected Natural Areas of Mexico, partially financed by the GEF (Global Environmental Facility).
Calakmul is relevant for its representation of mammals, these include six of the seven species of marsupials registered in the country; two of the three primates; two of the four indented; and five of the six cats.
