The Cliff Divers

La Quebrada is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Acapulco, Mexico.

Divers entertain tourists by jumping off either of two ledges on the cliff, one that is 40 feet (12 m) high and the top one which is 80 feet (24 m) high. The divers must calculate the right moment to jump to catch an incoming wave and avoid serious injury or death. Occasionally jumpers dive with a torch. Most of the divers come from the family of Quebrada divers.

Although cliff diving at La Quebrada had taken place for many years, it was not until 1934 that the La Quebrada Cliff Divers was formed.

Oaxaca's historic center

The Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán are a 16th century colonial town and a nearby pre-Columbian ceremonial centre.

Oaxaca is a typical Spanish colonial town: with a zocalo (central square), a cathedral and a strict building pattern. It was founded in 1529 and flourished mainly in the 18th century.

Nine kilometers west of Oaxaca lies the old Zapotec site of Monte Alban, dating from BC. Most of what remains now was made from 300-900, during the time about 25.000 people lived here. Tombs, a field for ballgames and several buildings are still in good shape.

How many beaches in Acapulco?

3 Things You Don't Know About Acapulco

In its glitzy heyday in the 1950s, Acapulco was best known as a getaway for Hollywood stars like John Wayne and Frank Sinatra. The glitz and glamour of those days may be long gone, but Acapulco never really lost its sizzle.

1) The stars still shine in secret places

Acapulco's reign as a glamour queen began in the 1930s, when John Wayne, Johnny Weissmuller, and an eclectic cast of characters came to play. Agustín Lara, the beloved composer of Solamente Una Vez and other classic boleros, played the ivories as his wife, actress María Félix, and Rita Hayworth danced in the sands of Playa Caleta -- the backdrop for Lara's love song Maria Bonita. The Duke, Errol Flynn, and their Hollywood gang bought the Hotel Los Flamingos in the '30s as headquarters for their sportfishing and carousing holidays; the hallways are lined with a gallery of Tarzan and friends.

2) It's a jungle out there

Acapulco is often battered by storms and fierce rains in which the skies seem to explode. Water rushes down hillsides, creating instant waterfalls and occasional rock slides on the main road to the airport. Water can reach knee height within a few hours in streets near the beach and around the plaza. Power outages are a possibility, and getting around can be a major hassle. But there's a bright side to the rainy season (roughly June to October).

3) Acapulco Bay is a frequent stopover for military vessels and hundreds of sailors

Pirates caroused Acapulco's beaches and caves in the 1600s, stashing their treasures before causing mayhem that prompted construction of the star-shaped Fuerte San Diego (now a fascinating nautical museum) to deter intruders. The most interesting ships in the bay these days carry U.S. Navy crews eager to blow off some steam.

Sunrise in Acapulco

Acapulco seduces. There are many reasons: its thousands of views over its two bays, a guaranteed sunshine 365 days a year, a rich gastronomic tradition, golden beaches, -each with its own personality-, its hotel offer, its breeze, its unique sunsets and its people.

Not in vain this destination in the State of Guerrero, Mexico, was in the 50's the whim of many Hollywood stars... Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Maria Felix, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Elvis Presley, the Kennedys, Dali and even the Shah of Persia were captivated by this city located just three hours by road from Mexico City.

The fact that Acapulco is a destination where extremes meet is also evident in its nightlife. For those who prefer a quiet dinner, with the Santa Lucia Bay as a backdrop, the range of restaurants offered today in the so-called Diamond Zone (the newest in the city) is a good alternative. One option is the restaurant El Becco, on Avenida Escénica, where in addition to excellent Italian food, the relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere assures diners an unforgettable evening.

A similar experience is offered by the Bella Vista restaurant at Las Brisas Hotel. Here the view from the terrace is breathtaking. Well, so is the Tataki tuna, with black and white sesame crust, accompanied by soy sauce and wasabe cream. For those looking for something more lively, the best place to go is the Zona de la Condesa, where the bars on the beach come alive at night. La Langosta Feliz, Barbarroja, Mangos and Paradise are some of the places that transform Miguel Aleman Avenue into a hullabaloo of musical rhythms that enliven even the carriages with colored lights that swarm on that road at that hour. A few meters from there, for the nostalgic, is the legendary disco Baby'O, almost a trademark of Acapulco and a favorite of the national and international jet set. Here, it is best to arrive early.
